It’s been a long time since I posted a bike v car graph. Mostly because the bike hasn’t been properly challenging the car; but also because graphs of personal cycling mileage are fairly uninteresting. But today I’m feeling uninteresting, and so I present you with a few graphs of recent ‘progress’.

Adding the dashed lines fulfilled a geeky urge
In a nutshell, 2011 kicked me in the balls, 2012 was a notable recovery but 2013 hasn’t really made much of a difference. The bike is still about 4000 miles behind. However I’ve almost completed 5000 miles this year which feels like a good achievement.

2012 v 2013 – a more even contest
In other news I have been satisfying my pregnant wife’s nesting desires (and obviously my own DIY urges) by building new things for our home. In between working, and cycling to work, this week I built us a new bed.

Step 1 – transport pregnant wife around builders merchants to select bed-building materials

Step 2 – Enjoy the fine smell of freshly sawn timber

Forget ‘measure twice cut once’ … what about ‘measure once and drill until your elbow goes numb’?

A bucketful of dowels

Bed headboard ready for gluing

Headboard glued and strapped

Drilling a leg to house a side rail

After tidying up with a chisel

Checking the joint for fit

Headboard joint

Next corner joint

Frame ready for painting

Simple matt white paint finish

Dismantling our old DIY floating plank bed

Cutting down old planks

Re-*cycling* planks [tenuous link]

Enjoying a well-earned beer / rest

Brilliant.
Oh wow. You do know you can buy those things ready made though?
😉
You’re right though. I think the bed building was more interesting than the graph, but it was a close run thing as I love a good graph.
The materials probably cost as much as an Ikea bed frame! But I’m hoping it is better made so will last longer. Maybe I will bring back the graphs!
Very cool man.
The occasional graph is entirely interesting (GO BIKE!) though I do agree that overexposure to them isn’t as entertaining.
Fantastic job on the bed. Well worth the effort.
Very impressive mileage and bed building. Just a thought – shouldn’t you have made the bed bigger than the old one as it will soon be sleeping 3!
Graphs are excellent … and so is the bed!
